Rabbits

Femal Silver FoxThese are the 2 bunnies that I got on 6/9/04. The blue one (gray) is a female and the black one is a male. They are of the "Silver Fox" breed of rabbit. They are very unique and not that common, especially around here (WI). What makes the Silver Fox unique is its fur which is like no other breed of rabbit. The base color of it is blue (gray) or black. Among the base color of the rabbit it also has many scattered white hairs which are longer than the base color. I also have a zoomed in picture of its fur below. By looking at the fur it resembles a porcupine. If you were to touch the fur it feels course and similar to a wild foxes fur (hence silver Fox). Black Silver Fox MaleThis breed of rabbit is very sweet and loving. Although it is a bigger rabbit, weighing inbetween 9-11 lbs, it is still a good pet for an older kid.
I have a history with Silver Fox's. Some may even call me obsessed with them. When I was in 4-H I bred rabbits and sometimes cross-bred them. Cross bred rabbits can be some of the prettiest and friendliest. After years of mix breeding I came up with something very unusual and like no other rabbit I had ever seen before. I fell in love at first sight! At this time I had no idea that it was in fact a Silver Fox. I took Blake (my very first silver fox) to a rabbit show and to my surprise someone recognized its breed. John Hass, our 4-HBlack Silver Fox Fur (zoomed in) superintendent, came to me one day and said "do you know what that is?" I said "sure, it's a rabbit" (not knowing its breed mind you). That's when he explained to me what Blake was. I was absolutely amazed that I came up with a recognized breed of rabbit by mix breeding. By doing this it helped me learn about rabbit genetics. I continued to breed them and came up with both blacks and blues but with my luck the blues soon became un-showable. The way that rabbit breeds work is that so many rabbits of a breed must be shown for it to be a recognized breed. Since there weren't many of them shown (again meaning that they are rare) the American Rabbit Breeders Association (A.R.B.A) deemed them as not being a standard breed. Many fans of the Silver Fox are trying to bring back the blues but have not been successful so far. Hopefully they will come back some day.
