Blue Lobsters

You should know;

Blue lobsters are very, very rare. It has been debated but most scientists say that the blue colored lobsters are that way for the same reason that there are albino people (lack of a gene). Not only are there few blue lobsters born but the ones that are don't last to long. Because of their unique color, blue lobsters get eaten by prey quickly. They would be better off with a bulls eye painted on them. What I have are not really lobsters, they are crawfish. The reason I titled this page "Blue lobsters" is because many people don't know what a crawfish is but everyone knows what a lobster is. There are several differences between lobsters and crawfish besides their size. One difference is that a lobster has a pincher claw and crusher claw which is bigger than their pincher claw. Crawfish have 2 pincher claws. Another difference is that crawfish come in many, many different colors and patterns.

How it all started for us;

My sweetie saw our 1st blue lobster at the pet shop a little over a month ago (today is 03/04/03) and was insistent that he have one. I reluctantly agreed. Shortly after he brought home the first one, he wanted a second. I agreed again (my mistake). We put them both in the same tank and they seemed to fight. After a couple days we removed the newest one from the tank and he died a week later (not because of fighting). At that time the first lobster, who was usually outgoing, became a hermit (no pun intended). First we thought that she was depressed from loosing her friend but little did we know, she had gotten pregnant (I guess they were not fighting)! She laid eggs and tucked them under her tail. We thought that she might be going through a false pregnancy. The odds of us getting a male and a female that mated in 2 days is slim to none right? Well... she ended up having somewhere around 50 babies! In this short time I have grown attached to the little guys and I look forward to watching them grow.

The result;

Now the lobsters are taking over!! Because the babies are getting bigger and since there are 50 of them, we've had to add more tanks! We have 8 tanks, 4 of them have baby lobsters in them!!

Mom crawfish To the left is is our Mom crawfish (mini lobster). She is 3 inches long and had 50 babies on 3/2/03!

There are 2 baby lobsters hiding in this cute tank. The 2 we put in here are missing claws because of battles with other babies. Don't worry, they do grow back! 2 baby lobsters hiding in this cute tank

one of her babies just after it hatched This is one of her babies just after it hatched on 3/2/03. I have a red arrow pointing to it and a ruler so you can see how small it is!

This is a close up of an other baby by a bubble right after it hatched on 3/2/03. close up of a baby lobster

zoomed in picture of a baby lobster This is a zoomed in picture of a baby. It is hard to tell what they are. Especially since they are see-through!

1/2 inch long to 2 1/2 inches long lobsters
There growing! They now range from a 1/2 inch long to 2 1/2 inches long! (4/3/03)

This is close to the actual size of most our lobsters as of 4/25/03. All lobsters shed but our babies are shedding all the time because they are growing at such a fast rate! We got to see this one crawl out of his shell!!
