Frogs

75 gallon terrarium
Above is my 75 gallon terrarium. All my fire belly toads and my red eye tree frog live here. In this huge terrarium they are able to jump around almost as if they were in the wild. There is a waterfall on the left which keeps it damp in there. I also put a fogger and a humidifier in there on an occasion because they need their environment so humid. Sometimes I even put a small gold fish in the 5 gallon tank on the right.

red eye tree frogTo the left is my red eye tree frog. He lives with my fire belly toads in my 75 gallon terrarium. In some ways he is like a regular tree frog you would find in your back yard. He eats crickets and other small insects. He has suction-cup-like fingers that help him climb. In some ways he is unusual though. He has the coolest coloring! His big red eyes have 3 eye lids!! The bottom lid is like a net shield that he can see through. He is native to rainforests in Central South America and Costa Rica. Although red eye tree frogs are docile I would not recommend an inexperienced person to get them. They are not easy to take care of and they like to be left alone because their skin is so sensitive. They are also nocturnal and you will not be able to see them moving unless you are up at 3am. During the day they tuck their feet in and stick themselves to their habitat.

fire belly toadsTo the right and below are my 2 fire belly toads that I love very much. I plan on getting many more to fill my 75 gallon terrarium. I might even add some fire belly newts because my Fiancé likes them so much. Some people say that fire belly toads can’t be in the same tank with red eye tree frogs. I’ve had mine together now for a year and they have done just fine. There are 2 reasons (that I know of) why people think they can’t live together. One reason is that frogs will eat anything that they can fire belly toad hiding.put in their mouth. Some frogs can get big enough to eat a toad. Mine, however, is not that big. Also, I find that if you feed them enough crickets they will not be as tempted to eat a toad. Frogs would much prefer a cricket over a toad any day. More specifically, they like very small food. The smaller the crickets are, the better. The other reason is because fire belly toads produce a toxin in their skin which can be harmful to all animals including themselves. In order to keep everyone alive, the terrarium must be clean especially the water supply which is where they spend most of their time. As long as they are well fed and cleaned often, there shouldn’t be a problem (providing one can’t fit the other in its mouth).

Water frog named "Bernice"To the right is my water frog Bernice. She eats 1 inch long goldfish or whatever will fit in her mouth (including my fingers)! As she sits now, she is the size of an average mans hand. When she is stretched out she is at least 9 inches long! I named her Bernie when I got her because she reminded me of some one I worked with (haha) but soon after that she laid eggs. Then I knew she was a Bernice, not a Bernie. She is a very old lady now. I got her back in 1999 when she was already full grown. No one could understand why I wanted such an "ugly" frog. Sure, she looks like a plucked chicken on the outside but I think she is pretty on the inside. I know she is really old and I dread the day she passes but I still love her very much.
