These cute little guys are my figure 8 puffer fish! These puffer fish are best in brackish water (salt water but not as salty as a normal salt water tank). They get up to 2.5 inches long and live up to 5 years. They eat many things but prefer live food, especially snails. Mine eat mysis shrimp. These puffers look pregnant when their belly is full of food. Then when they are hungry again they look very skinny. Puffers are curious creatures and have an undying need to investigate everything. They will look over each and every inch of their tank, occasionally picking at different things to feel their texture. They are very out going and will come to the front of the tank when they see you. Some will even follow you around the tank when you walk by. They are unique fish as they can swim in every direction without turning their body. They are like little helicopters in this way. I have been told that they are bottom dwellers but every one of mine hasn't chosen a preference. That's actually one reason I like these little guys. With other fish you have to get several different kinds as they all dwell in different spots, be it on the top, middle, or bottom of the tank. My puffers move all over the tank at various times. The one negative thing about them is they have to be housed alone for the most part. Some might have luck housing a few puffers together (as I do) but this isn't always possible as they like their space. Some have even had luck housing them with Scat fish (also pictured on this page). However, many people find that they can only house one puffer to a tank. I consider myself one of the lucky ones as I've always been able to keep many puffers together. |
Although we don't like to play favorites, this is our most special fish. Most people don't think that a fish can have a personality. Well, most people haven't met our Scat (a Scat is a breed of fish). He is really amazing. He is intrigued by everything. He investigates anything he can, including people. He will follow people as they move around his tank. If you move close to him, he will back up. But as soon as you step back he will swim toward you! We find ourselves playing with him all the time. There is no other fish quite like this guy! We have since had other Scats and none compare. Some come close though. We will never be without one :) |
To the left is the 75 gallon tank that we had our Oscars in. We had 4 Oscars, one shovel nosed cat fish, 2 needle nose fish, and many gold fish for them to eat. When the Oscars were small we even had a blue lobster in there with them. Once they got bigger we had to take them out because they love to eat crawfish! I have always loved Oscar fish. They have caring personalities, even for a fish. They truly get attached to each other. I had one pass away once and its friend swam around it until I got it out of the tank. It was truly sad. You might think I'm nuts for thinking that they have a sweet personality. Get to know one some time. They really are neat fish! I have a picture of my albino (looks yellow and orange) and one of my 3 black and red ones below. I also have a picture of the shovel nose cat fish below to the left. Cat fish are quite extra ordinary also. When they eat, they suck their pray in like a vacuum. One big slurp and it's over! Blink and it's over! They also emit a poison if they get stressed. Ours did this once. Most of the time it kills everything in the tank, including itself. We got lucky. We had an awesome filter and caught it in time so we could do water changes. We didn't loose any of them. We still don't know what stressed him out though.
I don't have a picture of our needle fish. They are like a barracuda but thinner. Some types of needle fish get 5+ feet long!! Ours were only around 6 inches though. I've actually heard of them spearing humans!! They like to jump out of the water and occasionally a boat is passing by at just the wrong time and the fish actually impales the person on the boat! Can you imagine being punctured or even killed by a needle nose fish! Wow. I do have them on video eating dinner. If you would like to see it, click one of the videos at the top of this page.
We no longer have these fish. They got to big and we had to move out of the place we were living. We gave them away. Before giving it away I would decorate it for the holidays. The picture to the right is of the tank decorated for easter. Click on thepicture to see a larger view. Now that the fish are gone my gerbil lives in the tank! He absolutely loves all the room! |
This was my black gold fish. I love fan tail gold fish! This one lived with our blue crawfish for a while. We had to separate them because the crawfish liked to grab a hold of the gold fish's tail and not let go. The poor gold fish would swim frantically around the tank trying to shake the crawfish off. Crawfish have habits of grabbing long fins. They do okay with top dwelling, short finned fish but not the long finned guys. We learned the hard way. This gold fish lived for a long time. We had her in our bed room at one point. It was very relaxing watching her and falling asleep. |
